It does give a warm fuzzy to use the term "guardian" but it's so very important that folks understand the ramifications of the terms they use, such as the difference between Animal Welfare and Animal Rights and guardian/owner. Of course the vast majority of us treat our dogs as family but legally they are property which affords them certain protections that are not always readily apparent and also gives us certain responsibilities and liabilities toward their care and control.Rachelehttp://www.sacpetsits.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1624081456486559152.post-33822111895403900032012-10-14T00:56:12.393-07:002012-10-14T00:56:12.393-07:00Thank you for this article! As a military spouse, ...Thank you for posting this. As a military spouse, the spread of BSL is a horrific and saddening thing to see. I can't add a dog to my family, of any breed, without worrying how far and how fast BSL will go.

BSL starts off with one or two breeds. But that list grows. Dog owners, regardless of their breed of choice, needs to actively and LOUDLY protest BSL. It may not effect your breed yet, but it WILL eventually. And it does immediately put your dog at risk.

Instead of BSL, bases and local government needs to establish and enforce stronger ownership laws. Laws addressing health, containment & leash laws and harsher penalties for neglecting to follow these regulations.

Breed bans solve NOTHING. The breeds themselves are not the issue. Its the owners. And if you leave the owners unchecked, they'll simply either move on to a different breed or ignore the ban entirely. Only the responsible, law abiding owners and good dogs will be affected by these bans. Not irresponsible owners who produce problematic dogs.

As for the GSD and Malinois... Despite their current service in the US Military... Even they are banned as pets on various military instillations...BomberGalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15037814754022882556noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1624081456486559152.post-13161732583925379052010-10-26T06:35:23.065-07:002010-10-26T06:35:23.065-07:00Good to hear about the Chako Pit Bull Rescue.. He is a 15 year old pit bull that can barely walk now. His two buddies, two orange tabby cats, hang out with him. I've been doing this for a couple years now and have never had an incident. Of course I'd never do this if I ever thought there would be the danger of the dog doing anything. My biggest fear is an unleashed dog running up and attacking him. You talk about pit bull ambassadors, I think my dog is one, although some people are still afraid of him and cross the street to walk by my house, I think he has won over many other that were initially leary. "I can only control my dog, not what people think" is how I take it. My only motivation for letting him sit in the front yard is that he clearly enjoys it and it seems completely safe and harmless in my neighborhood. He basically just sits there, usually a good 15 feet back from the sidewalk.
